Bloodlines was a September read for our book club. We received this book from the author. Bloodlines was Kendal’s debut novel in 2010 and is the first book in a trilogy. I found Bloodlines very engaging! I was swept up into the relationship between Kiera, the narrator, and her best friend Lily. Lily was one of my favorite characters in this story! She keeps Keira grounded and lightens her up when she needs it. Kendal wrote characters that you wanted to care about. The tight group of loving and supportive families is always a favorite element and Kendal delivered. Occasionally I struggled to follow the dialogue and who the statements were attributed to. I also found myself missing details about the characters (ages, vocations) until Kendal spelled it out very explicitly during Keira’s conversations with the boys’ moms. I loved the magic and mystery of Bloodlines. There were moments that widened my eyes and had me gripping my tablet in suspense. I’m not a fan of love triangles (or rectangles) but Kendal kept it light enough for me to stick with Keira’s thoughts. Sometimes the plot seemed personal and bitter; it got really dark when a character was shot. Since Bloodlines finished with a serious cliffhanger, I’m really looking forward to reading the sequel: Torment.
